NuCore Ashen Oak Rigid Core Luxury Vinyl Plank

The embossed-in-register texture on Ashen Oak follows the grain and knot patterns printed on the visual layer, creating a tactile surface that mimics hand-scraped oak. You’ll feel slight depressions along the grain lines and raised texture around knot clusters.

While it’s convincing underfoot and to the touch, it lacks the deeper relief and natural irregularities of solid wood that’s been wire-brushed or hand-planed. The embossing is also uniform across production runs, so you won’t find the one-of-a-kind texture variations present in reclaimed hardwood.

Ashen Oak uses a rigid stone-polymer composite core instead of the flexible PVC backing found in traditional LVP. This makes the planks much stiffer and more resistant to denting from heavy furniture or impacts.

Rigid core vinyl also installs as a true floating floor without telegraphing minor subfloor imperfections, whereas flexible LVP often requires a smoother substrate or full-spread adhesive. The trade-off is that rigid planks feel slightly harder underfoot, though our cork underlayment compensates for some of that firmness.

The 20-mil wear layer includes UV inhibitors that resist fading under normal indoor light exposure, but prolonged direct sunlight through large windows can cause gradual color shift over several years. We recommend window treatments or UV-filtering film on south- and west-facing glass in rooms where the floor receives intense afternoon sun.

Any fading will be gradual and even across the exposed area. If you later move furniture or rugs, you may notice a slight color difference between protected and exposed sections, similar to what happens with natural hardwood or carpet.

Absolutely. The waterproof core makes Ashen Oak an excellent choice for full bathrooms, powder rooms, and laundry areas where standing water and humidity are common. We do recommend sealing the perimeter with 100% silicone caulk where the floor meets tubs, showers, and toilet bases to prevent water from seeping underneath.

Even though the planks themselves won’t absorb moisture, water that migrates under the floor can create mold or mildew on the subfloor below. Proper perimeter sealing and adequate bathroom ventilation will keep everything dry.

Because NuCore Ashen Oak uses a click-lock system, you can remove and replace individual planks without adhesive. For planks in the middle of the room, you’ll need to carefully cut out the damaged piece using a circular saw set to the plank’s thickness, then chisel away the edges to expose the locking tabs of the surrounding planks.

Once the damaged plank is removed, cut the bottom locking lip off a new plank and slide it into place, securing it with a bead of construction adhesive around the perimeter. This technique works for single-plank repairs without disturbing the rest of the floor.

Standard T-molding, reducer strips, and threshold transitions designed for 5mm to 7mm flooring will work with Ashen Oak’s 5.5mm overall thickness including the cork backing. We offer color-matched transitions, or you can use universal metal or wood profiles if you prefer a contrasting accent.

At exterior doors, use a weatherproof threshold with a sloped profile to prevent water infiltration. Leave the required 1/4-inch expansion gap and fill it with silicone caulk in a color that blends with the flooring.
